Austin Dean Bud Brisbois April 11, 1937 June 1978 was a jazz and studio trumpeter. He played jazz, pop, rock, country, Motown, and classical music. Brisbois was born in Edina, Minnesota and began studying the trumpet at age 12. He was mainly self-taught, and reportedly had most of his range before leaving high school. He briefly attended University of Minnesota before moving to Los Angeles, where he would live most of his life, when not touring. In September 1958 he joined Stan Kenton's. Trumpeter Bud Brisbois performing Lennie Niehaus' arrangement of Dizzy Gillespie's Woody 'n You. Bud Brisbois gained his reputation based on his ability to work in the higher ranges of the trumpet. He was with Stan Kenton & His Orchestra during the late '50s and early '60s, playing with one of Kenton's better aggregations. This tribute album compiles previously unreleased Brisbois material covering 1956 when he made his first recording while still in high school to 1978, with a variety of groups playing a variety of jazz modes, ranging from straight-ahead jazz through high falutin' compositional endeavors. The latter is represented by the modern, but shallow, jazz symphony just a cut above Kenton at his most pretentious Titan Suite recorded with the Chicago Philharmonic.
