After the release of their 2016 album Conscious, both Georgia and Caleb Nott took time off to pursue solo projects before reuniting in 2018, signing a new record deal with Neon Gold Records and. At its best, Pop Monster injects plenty of fresh ideas into the Broods' repertoire, offering a handful of confident and polished gems that could have made for a stunning album if they had just sharpened their focus. Otherwise, lackluster inclusions that echo Lorde's sophomore shift dull the effort, which distracts from the excitement that occasionally shines through. In other words, be willing to experiment, to explore, and be true to themselves as artists. The attitude can be felt in everything from the album's title to its lyrics. In the glitchy opener Sucker , Georgia Nott sings, Almost lost myself just trying to be like somebody else, and in the defiant electroclash of Old Dog , she rails, Im not here just to pleaseGet that leash off me.
