This 2012 Delphian recording by Scottish cellist Philip Higham delves deeply into the suites' expressive potential, and the music's emotional riches are wonderfully communicated in these focused performances. Higham is an accomplished musician, yet he doesn't strive for obvious effects, and while his mastery of the suites' difficulties is apparent, his playing seems effortless. The cello suites by Benjamin Britten Opp. 72, 80, and 87 are a series of three compositions for solo cello, dedicated to Mstislav Rostropovich. The suites were the first original solo instrumental music that Britten wrote for and dedicated to Rostropovich, but Britten had earlier composed a cadenza for Joseph Haydn's Cello Concerto in C major, for Rostropovich, in 1964. Rostropovich gave the first performances of each work, and recorded Suites Nos 1 and 2 commercially. Young British cellist Philip Higham offers impressive interpretations here, grabbing attention right from the hypnotically mournful opening of the first suite, leading into its dance of furtive harmonies and counterpoints. But it's the third suite that stands out, the overwhelming solemnity of its introductory Canto immediately dispersed by the nimbler Marcia and the Dialogo's conversation between bowed and plucked notes, before drawing together the various threads and themes in the lengthy Passacaglia.
