Brahms' late music was a revelation to me for its inventiveness, quality and uncharacteristically intimate perspective. But, given that Brahms is one of the all-time masters of lyricism and sonority, this should be no surprise. The two sets of Variations here - on themes by Handel and by Paganini - were composed in 186162 when Brahms was in his late 20s. But the remaining pieces were composed betwen1879 and 1893, just four years before his death. It is these pieces that give the title of the CD
