Wilson, vaulted into demand after producing the 1994 album Smash by The Offspring, reportedly turned down an offer to record an album for Aerosmith in order to produce Maniacal Laughter. In a 2016 interview, guitarist Pete Steinkopf described recording the album with Wilson in California: At that point, we were a machine. Wed been touring endlessly for two years.
