After spending several years with Ozzy Osbourne and recording one album with the heavy Southern rock trio Pride & Glory, guitarist Zakk Wylde released his debut solo album, Book of Shadows, in June of 1996. Naturally, the album is a guitar showcase, with each song boasting a dazzling guitar solo or two. That much was expected. What is a surprise is the musical diversity apparent throughout the album. Book 2: Veil of Shadows. Book 3: Command Decisions. Book 4: Ghosts of Empire. My opinion remains unchanged with book 2, Veil of Shadows. The author makes no attempt to invent new technologies, original aliens, or anything else, but manages to combine a wide variety of tried and true scifi concepts into a unique and interesting story. It is coherent, consistant within itself, and well told. Wylde released the Book of Shadows album in 1996 and will issue its follow-up, aptly titled Book of Shadows II on April 8. Wylde has been working on the album since winding down Black Label Society 's Unblackened trek last spring. All of the songs on Book of Shadows II were recorded and produced at Wylde's home studio, the Black Vatican. Book of Shadows was a key disc in the development of Wylde's identity outside of being known as Ozzy Osbourne 's guitarist.
