African Herbsman is a compilation of the Wailers songs, released by Trojan Records in 1973, shortly after their major-label debut album Catch a Fire had been released by Island Records. The compilation is the UK equivalent of the Jamaican album Soul Revolution, with the songs Memphis and Duppy Conqueror replaced by several other tracks from the period. Most of the added tracks are non-album singles from the period, but it also includes 400 Years from the album Soul Rebels. What you get is a 16-track reggae masterpiece capturing what is perhaps some of the best music Bob Marley & the Wailers ever committed to tape. The songs range from beautiful love songs like Don't Rock the Boat to cathartic political anthems like Brain Washing, but even with the broad scope, no tracks miss the mark. They all cut straight to the heart and burn with an urgency rarely felt in music of any genre. The one I own is not a dual disk release, but does include several interesting and essential versions that were dubbed over by Lee Perry's Upsetters and voiced over by proto rapper Big Youth
