The Bootleg Series Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes Complete is a compilation album of unreleased home recordings made in 1967 by Bob Dylan and the group of musicians that would become the Band, released on November 3, 2014 on Legacy Records. Eventually, in 1975, Dylan and The Band cede to demand and release an official Basement Tapes album. Robbie Robertson, along with engineer Rob Fraboni, takes the lead. They collapse Hudsons original 1967 wide-pan stereo recordings into mono and add additional instrumentation and vocals recorded by The Band in an attempt to make the recordings sound more like a finished product. In the end they revamp 16 songs and record 8 new ones without Dylan. On many of the basement tapes, its obvious that Dylan is attracted to a melody or a chorus but doesnt know the words to the song. Hes intimately familiar with Waltzing with Sin and gives it an impressive reading. Preserving newly written Bob Dylan songs for copyright is the reason why the Band's Garth Hudson rolled tape at Big Pink but The Basement Tapes were something much more than songwriting demos. Don't underestimate the significance of 'The Basement Tapes. Nearly 50 years after they were made, Bob Dylan and the Band 's fabled home recordings remain the Holy Grail of their era, mythical artifacts that have been pieced together over the years but never fully uncovered. From bootlegs to books, the hundred-plus songs recorded by Dylan and the still-unnamed Band during the summer of 1967 around Woodstock, NY have been picked over, dissected and worshiped since the late '60s, when a handful of them were copyrighted for publishing purposes. But nothing comes close to the 138 stereo tracks found on 'The Basement Tapes Complete. I love the Bob Dylan 'Bootleg' series of Archive releases. Dylan has been an amazingly prolific recording artist, so much so that his demo or rejected recordings take on a life of their own. The original 'Basement Tapes' bootlegs are perhaps the grandaddy of them all, and like most Dylan fans, I was very eager to hear 'The Basement Tapes Complete'. However, this is where I think that perhaps the concept runs dangerously close to being too much of a good thing. The greatest album Bob Dylan never intended to make hours of blues, country, folk ballads and newly composed surrealism recorded as far off the grid as he could get in 1967 has been a half-century in coming, arriving in waves of teasing and surprise bootlegs, the 1975 Columbia double LP, newly unearthed takes like treasure from a trunk with many false bottoms. In October 1967, Dylan was on his own again, cutting John Wesley Harding. But the trunk of treasure he and the Band made in their short season of hiding keeps on giving. Popular on Rolling Stone. There are some good tracks here and there but most is so damn wrong hahabut that is bOb Dylan he gets away with it and its all good baby. Posted on November 3rd, 2014 at 12:42 pm. What a pathetic state of affairs. In spring 1967, Dylan and the Band were out of step, but ahead of the curve. I love Dylan - but most of this is useless filler. The real Basement Tapes double album is plenty - you don't need the deleted scenes from it - and they are certainly not 1010 material. Now, 47 years on, even the listener overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of whats on offer here-who doesnt want to hear the false starts and fragments and gags-might conclude that the highlights are as timeless as rock music in the 60s got. You know at first I thought I could live with the 3lp set which is indeed very nice. That was all thrown out the window when I really sat down and listened to the 6cd masterpiece! Incredible set, beautiful books, photos and of course the timeless music preserved in the best possible quality!

I made the mistake of bringing this collection to a girlfriend’s house and now CD 3 is ruined and CD 5 is missing. If anyone out there would like to sell CD 3 and 5 for whatever reason, please message me. I really want these 2 CDs, so you name the price and I’ll pay it. I’m in The US. Thanks

Unfortunately you’re gonna have better luck buying a new set and trying to sell the discs you have to salvage some of the cost.
Wat!?
I've heard plenty of actual bootlegs of these recordings and they sound far superior on this release. I can't believe there isn't more buzz about this restoration. A whole new perspective on this set and a treasure trove of tunes here.

I've been toying with the Basement Tapes since I first heard about them … and I first heard about them in the mid 60's as holy grail rumors, circulating with the reverence of urban legends in Dylan circles. There were even bootlegged copies of those sessions floating around, with people merely hinting that they knew a guy who knew a guy who had heard them. There was one white jacketed vinyl version with a mimeographed flyer taped to the front [which I wish I still had], then there was a collection of rather poorly recorded cassettes, and finally, like the parting of the Red Sea, the Basement Tapes were officially released as a vinyl album. I remember everyone grabbing a copy, thinking that they were going to gain some personal insight, get clued in, understand the inter-workings, and perhaps the curtains would be parted, and Mr. Dylan would at last be revealed. But truth be told, that grouping of songs were rather uninteresting to me, they certainly didn't reveal much I didn't already know. With more songs from these sessions surfacing as time went on, the one thing I became more sure of, was that the best material had already seen the light of day, and that His-Bobness, his mates, and his mate's heirs were certainly going to cash in on some serious bucks. And therein lies the joke of all time, much like the American Indians taking back all that was theirs from the white man, one dollar at a time from their casinos, Mr. Dylan found that anything he touched was gold.Since those first Basement Tapes came out Dylan has been selling harmonicas he's used on stage, even if he blew one single note on them, for several hundred dollars, a signed one for even more [actually $5,000], and I haven't even gotten to the limited edition signed box set containing several used during full shows, or his appearance on Pawn Stars. I imagine him, Sharpie in hand, sitting on his bus rolling down Highway 61 to next town, a pile of harps in front of him, CNN on the tube, signing late into the lonely night.Well, it's been nearly 50 years since Garth Hudson so meticulously cataloged all the comings and goings that transpired during those heady nights in that Woodstock basement … and here we are today, people still hungry for anything that Bob Dylan has touched, and to that end, I hope that you enjoy it, that all your questions get answered, that the clouds evaporate, the curtains part, that His Royal Bob-ness ascends from your stereo and reveals truths, like old testament scriptures to your upturned face. But I doubt that will happen …*** Yes, the Basement Tapes have had a profound effect, they've sparked: One band called The New Basement Tapes, and well over 100 individual albums by other bands who refer to their material as The Basement Tapes.Review by Jenell Kesler
