4 is the fourth studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, released in September 1972. It was the first album by Black Sabbath not produced by Rodger Bain guitarist Tony Iommi assumed production duties. Patrick Meehan, the band's then-manager, was listed as co-producer, though his actual involvement in the album's production was minimal. And it isn't just in the lyrics, most of which are about the blurry line between reality and illusion. 4 has all the messiness of a heavy metal Exile on Main St. and if it lacks that album's overall diversity, it does find Sabbath at their most musically varied, pushing to experiment amidst the drug-addled murk. As a result, there are some puzzling choices made here not least of which is the inclusion of FX, and the album often con. Black Sabbath 'Vol. 4' is a bit of a departure for the band. Lyrically, they are getting into deeper waters on this album, and I'm sure the excessive consumption of various chemicals had a big hand in that. The gothic themes of the first three albums are fading somewhat here, and are gradually being replaced by the real life horrors of fame and addiction. Internally, they were beginning to unravel a bit, and the songs seem to reveal an emotional ebb and flow that ranges from mournful 'Changes' to manic 'Supernaut' and back again 'Snowblind', cr. But Black Sabbath took a nose dive with Vol. After a record like Master of Reality, I'm not quite sure how it's possible that a band could sound so utterly uninspired. Sabbath did it, however, and thanks to several shortcomings managed to release one of their worst albums with or without Ozzy.
