Contrary to the implication of the album title, this is NOT a live album. Rather, it is a collection of selected tracks from Joel's first five albums for CBS/Sony: Piano Man, Streetlife Serenade, Turnstiles, The Stranger, and 52nd Street.

CBS/Sony released this as a promotion-only item to support Joel's tour of Japan.
