Somehow an Aidan Moffat album starting out with a piano part courtesy of collaborator and longtime Glasgow music fixture Bill Wells that could almost be Lionel Richie and Diana Ross' Endless Love seems weirdly appropriate. It doesn't quite stay like that, but Wells' shift to include brushed drums and acoustic bass atmospheres doesn't change the fundamental sense of the duo finding a split between elegant melancholy in and of itself and, courtesy of Moffat's lyrics, often vivisecting what the ideas of it could be. Alternative 2011. re both sensational cuts, however, the true essence of Everything's Getting Older comes when Moffat enters reflective mode, on a pair of songs which in their own right rank as mini-masterpieces. A monument of naked, numbing beauty, 'The Copper Top' bases itself in the aftermath of a cremation, and finds the lyricist drowning his sorrows and pondering his own mortality. Album Rating: 5. This is probably my album of the decade so far. The follow-up's out on Monday and is also amazing, so this seemed like a pretty good time to review it. Please, please give it a go. Arab Strap vocalist Moffat half-speaks novelistic lyrics, while composerpianist Wells creates spare yet emotionally intense themes of great beauty. As with some diseases, the album gets worse before it gets better, but by the end you're left stunned in admiration. Hell, there's even a redemptive arc. Released 2011.
