Album

Meet Betty Carter and Ray Bryant is a 1955 jazz album by singer Betty Carter and pianist Ray Bryant both debuting here on record as leading artists. Although Carter is mentioned first, she is only featured on half of the tracks. On three of the six songs Jerome Richardson is also heard on flute. The other half is recorded by the Ray Bryant Trio alone. The six tracks with Betty Carter were reissued under her name in 1980 on the compilation album Social Call together with previously unreleased material. This LP featured singer Betty Carter and pianist Ray Bryant at the beginning of their careers. Carter's 25-year-old voice was already quite recognizable, although the improvising style on her 11 titles here is much more conservative than it would be from the 1970s on. However, Carter's scatting on Frenesi which sounds like a wigged-out Carmen McRae shows individuality, and her renditions of Social Call, I Could Write a Book, and Moonlight in Vermont are memorable. A historic and enjoyable set. Meet Betty Carter and Ray Bryant, 1955. Betty Carter. Now playing . Carter is backed by Bryant's trio with Wendell Marshall on bass and Papa Jo Jones on drums. The flautist on three tracks is Jerome Richardson. Tracks 14, 15 and 17 were recorded on June 1, 1955 in NYC with Bryant backed by his trio Marshall and Jones, and tracks 16 and 18 a month later on July 1, 1955 by the same trio. This album combines the equally great talents of Betty Carter and Ray Bryant to create a classic fusion of jazz group and vocal. The first half of the album showcases Betty Carter's phenomenal singing, from racing scat riffs Thou Swell to the deep, husky renditions of Moonlight in Vermont and, my absolute favourite, Gone with the Wind.
