Volume 1 in The Complete Bert Williams series, The Early Years, 1901-1909, compiles 31 of the inimitable comedian's recordings dating back as far as his landmark 1901 sessions, through to his 1906 sessions at which Williams waxed several of his trademark songs. Given the limited dynamics of these expertly restored acoustic discs and cylinders, that's not to claim he still sounds as vivid as he must have then. The Early Years is a two-part retrospective album series of Tom Waits songs, consisting of recordings made before Waits's debut album, Closing Time. Volume one was released in 1991 and volume two was released in 1993 on BizarreStraight. The recordings were made between July and December 1971. Some of the songs on the album appear on the early albums Waits recorded for Asylum Records. In 2010, both volumes of The Early Years were released on vinyl by Manifesto Records. In May 1909 he returned to Hammerstein's Victoria Theater and the high-class vaudeville circuit. His new act consisted of several songs, comic monologues in dialect, and a concluding dance. He received top billing and a high salary, but the White Rats of America, an organization of vaudevillians opposed to encroachments from blacks and women, intimidated the theater managers into reducing Williams' billing. Johnny Cash covered Williams' song Nobody on his album American III: Solitary Man released in 2000. In 1996, Bert Williams was inducted into the International Clown Hall of Fame.
