The Flying Club Cup is the second studio album by Balkan folk-influenced indie folk band Beirut, released on October 9, 2007 on 4AD Records. The album features string arrangements by Arcade Fire contributor Owen Pallett, also known by his former stage name Final Fantasy. Recording started in a small studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico and later finished in Arcade Fires Petite Église , a renovated church in Farnham, Quebec. The album features a larger, more rounded range of instrumental accompaniments, including string arrangements by Owen Pallett, who is well known as a contributor on two Arcade Fire albums Funeral and Neon Bible. According to notes given out at Beiruts performance at the Society of Ethical Culture in 2007, each song in this album is meant to evoke a different city in Fra. Flying Club Cup deftly showcases Condon's gifts: Nantes sounds exotic without directly referencing a particular era or feeling, and A Sunday Smile- despite being about specific people and places- evokes universal sensations such as sleepiness and warmth. On The Flying Cup Club, and maybe on all of Beirut's records, this exoticism takes the form not of alienation but of a search for a familiar place within what seems or sounds unfamiliar, difficult, or repulsive. It's the process of searching that untethers the record from any limiting sense of place, be it an Arrondissement in Paris or a village in the Balkans.
