Beethoven: Lieder, Vol. And Schreier is a wonderful advocate for Beethoven's earliest songs, making even the slightly ridiculous Elegie auf den Tod eines Pudels WoO 110 sound as much like a great song as it is ever likely to sound. Although no one would suggest foregoing the more profound pleasures of An die ferne Geliebte or the second An die Hoffnung, there are lighter and more delightful pleasures to be had in this volume. I would describe his performing style as formal and less outwardly expressive style than certain other singers, but nevertheless very musical and, as I mentioned, technically accomplished. Walter Obertz provides effective accompaniment. Schreier performs some early songs, including Adelaide, an attractive effort from the beginning of Beethoven's career 1796 but was revised and published a few years later, in LvB's middle period. I compared Schreier's effort with Wunderlich again and found Schreier to be on another level - very musical, structurally clear and that technique is oh so good.
