Later that year Abbado was diagnosed with cancer, and the brush with mortality seemed to deepen his partnership with the Berlin Philharmonic. These 4 DVDs capture live performances from 2001 that unite the Philharmonic's polished sound with insights from the period instrument movement. In 2000, Deutsche Grammophon released the complete Beethoven symphonies with Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic, taken from concerts in Berlin. Conductor and orchestra subsequently toured the cycle, and the performances they gave in Rome in January 2001 were recorded on video and released on DVD. If this proves to be Abbado's last recorded word on Beethoven's symphonies, it is a wonderful distillation of half a century's experience of conducting these works. Yet there is nothing old-fashioned or conservative about these performances, which are characterised by their lithe, dancing rhythms, transparent textures and perfectly articulated phrasing. The playing in the Fourth, Sixth and Eighth Symphonies marries the precision and suavity of modern instruments with the vitality of period performance practice. There's some sluggish scherzi and a heavy Fifth, Abbado's tempi is notably fleet, the sound radiant. But in the Second and Seventh Symphonies, emphasis on textural detail dilutes the drama.
