Surfer Girl reached number 7 in the US during a chart stay of 56 weeks. In the UK, the album was released in spring 1967 and reached number 13. This was my introduction to the Beach Boys, an album that has forever drifted in the back of my mine, and while it was sincerely an album of singles, thats the manner in which I came to know and love the Beach Boys. Unbeknown to me at the time, was that Brian Wilson had fully taken charge of the bands writing and production for the most part at this point, so what I was infused with was the eloquence and musicianship of the man, his vision, even though he didnt surf, and his ability to turn a phrase. What makes that girls Surfer Girl answer even more unusual is that The Beach Boys had released 4 albums and 13 singles 5 of which were top 10 hits since they released the Surfer Girl album 15 months ago in Sept. of 1963. Surfer Girl , the single, peaked at 7 also back in Sept. of 63. As American Bandstand has only been in Hollywood for less than a year, there arent many regulars on the show yet. Famous is probably around somewhere, lol. The only regular I spotted today was Debbie Sewell seated to the right of the boy that thinks The Beach Boys were a passing fad. Surfer Girl does have some great tunes, including the title song, the hot rod ditty Little Deuce Coupe, and Catch a Wave which could have been a substantial hit single on its own merits. Most significant of all is the gorgeous ballad In My Room, which anticipated future Beach Boys releases both in its sophisticated production strings, organ, dense harmonies and its personal, solipsistic lyrics.
