The Essential Barbra Streisand retitled The Ultimate Collection in some European countries is the fifth greatest hits album by American singer Barbra Streisand, released on January 29, 2002, by Columbia Records. The compilation features 38 songs from Streisand's catalog, in addition to two previously unreleased tracks covers of Someday My Prince Will Come and You'll Never Walk Alone. It includes material from 26 of the singer's albums and was described as a collection of, mainly, her pop songs. Released in January 2002, and drawing from four decades of her work, it includes all but one of her top-ten hits, and most of her top-forty hits. The album was particularly well-received as it reviewed most of her career - throughout its 38 songs, there are 26 albums represented. In addition, it includes two previously unreleased songs - Someday My Prince Will Come and a rendition of You'll Never Walk. The Essential Barbra Streisand maps her progress from the early 60s onwards, chronicling her willingness to experiment even while remaining true to her basic emotive style. Second Hand Rose, People, Dont Rain on My Parade and similar tracks show her precocious ability to grasp the sophistication of theater and jazz-based pop. With Stoney End, The Way We Were, and All in Love is Fair, she moved into the 70s with renewed vigor and confidence.
