Finnish label Ondine's release of The King Goes Forth to France is the first recording of the 1984 opera by Aulis Sallinen on a libretto by Paavo Haavikko. Haavikko is one of the most renowned figures in contemporary Finnish literature, and The King Goes Forth to France has its origins in a radio play presented on Finnish Radio a decade earlier. Aulis Sallinen born 9 April 1935 is a Finnish contemporary classical music composer. His music has been variously described as remorselessly harsh, a beautifully crafted amalgam of several 20th-century styles, and neo-romantic. Sallinen studied at the Sibelius Academy, where his teachers included Joonas Kokkonen. Sallinen's next opera, Kuningas lähtee Ranskaan The King Goes Forth to France, was a joint commission by Covent Garden and the Finnish National Opera. Later life. After receiving his lifelong art professorship, Sallinen devoted great amounts of time to composing. Released 2006. The King of England, his four female companions, his Prime Minister and his army flee their ice-bound country by crossing the frozen English Channel on foot, invading France, and reliving the Battle of Crécy and the Siege of Calais on the way to capturing Paris. If you heard the opera in English at Covent Garden in 1987, the idea of following it in Finnish may feel daunting, but the language has its own pungency and rhythmic interest, and time passes almost as swiftly as it seems to on stage. Aulis Sallinens The King Goes Forth to France had its premiere in London and Savonlinna, Finland in 1984 it was a joint commission from the Royal Opera and Savonlinna Opera Festival. It is a strange work, more ironic than outright comic. The libretto, by Paavo Haavikko, is chock-full of symbolism and barbed humor about power, war, and simple madness, and the entire package is an enjoyable if odd experience.
