The incredible passion of the legendary drummer and bandleader Art Blakey is briefly captured in this collection. All the tracks are taken from the early days of Blakey's Messengers in 1957-58. Although there are no personnel listed, the talents of Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons, Benny Golson, and Jymie Merritt are most likely included here.

As usual, the band is on fire throughout, with Blakey's drumming driving his men hard while the soloists rip through the group's intricate arrangements with blazing precision. Standout cuts include the sizzling "Theory of Art," the classic "Moanin'" and the percussion tour-de-force "A Night in Tunisia." New Art Blakey fans will find this set a useful starting point.
