Jeu de Cartes The Card Game is cleverly described as a ballet in three deals. It should be noted that the quotations and allusions sound very much like Stravinsky, never like a reworking of the source music as the composer did in his ballet Pulcinella, fashioned from several works of Pergolesi. Jeu de Cartes is very much in the tradition of the composer's neo-Classical style, full of wit and brilliant orchestration. A concert performance of the music typically lasts nearly 25 minutes. The Age of Anxiety explored a theme that Bernstein was repeatedly drawn to in his compositional career: as he described it, The essential line of the poem and of the music is the record of our difficult and problematical search for faith. Identifying strongly with the poem, he chose to write his symphony for piano and orchestra, noting that the pianist provides an almost autobiographical protagonist in the quest for meaning and faith. Bernstein's long-time mentor Serge Koussevitzky commissioned the symphony, and The Age of Anxiety premiered on April 8, 1949, with Koussevitzky conducting the Boston Symphony and Bernstein playing the piano solo. Jeu de cartes Card Game is a ballet in three deals, composed by Igor Stravinsky in 193637 with libretto by the composer in collaboration with M. Malaieff a friend of Stravinsky's eldest son Théodore Stravinsky, and with choreography by George Balanchine. The ballet was premiered by the American Ballet at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York City on 27 April 1937, with the composer conducting.
