Archie Shepp & the New York Contemporary Five is a live album by the New York Contemporary Five recorded at the Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen, Denmark on November 15, 1963 and featuring saxophonists Archie Shepp and John Tchicai, trumpeter Don Cherry, bassist Don Moore and drummer J. This historically significant LP has six selections recorded by the New York Contemporary Five on November 11, 1963. The short-lived group, which consists of cornetist Don Cherry, altoist John Tchicai, Archie Shepp on tenor, bassist Don Moore, and drummer J. The music recorded by this group is much more important than a lot of people realize. Their is a slight feel of Ornette Coleman flowing around this music,and not just because of Cherry's presence. The tunes are a combination of traditional jazz foundations on which the then new thinking was overlaid,which gives this setbesides good music an importance much greater than this fleeting group. Although saxophonist Archie Shepp is listed as the leader of this release, The New York Contemporary Five was really a collective a short-lived, free jazz super-group from the early 1960s. The band, with a front line of Shepp, cornetist Don Cherry and alto saxophonist John Tchicai, was recorded live at the famed Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen, Denmark on November 15, 1963. Originally released as a two-volume set on the Sonet label, volume one of that set is reissued here for the first time on CD in the U. by Chicago's Delmark Records. Cherry's Cisum opens the disc wi. In approximately a year's time the New York Contemporary Five NYC5 managed to squeeze out at least four records before splitting up in 1964. To mainstream jazz audiences, they barely existed. Even though they named themselves after the Big Apple, they spent a great deal of their short time together in Europe, where they were appreciated more. When Shepp, Cherry and Tchicai met up with bassist Don Moore and drummer J. Moses, the writing was on the wall: free jazz. Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane had already been paving stones out of the traditional and bebop humdrums. Everyone's sense of possibility was suddenly at a new level.
