Allen's first recordings were made in 1945, and included Miss Annie's Blues and Love for Sale. She sang with Big John Greer, Wynonie Harris, and Lucky Millinder, and in 1951, Federal Records signed her to sing with Millinder's orchestra. Annisteen Allen November 11, 1920 August 10, 1992 was an American blues and jazz singer. Ernestine Letitia Allen was born in Champaign, Illinois, United States. Her first recordings were made in 1945, and included Miss Annie's Blues and Love for Sale. She sang with Big John Greer, Wynonie Harris, and Lucky Millinder. In 1951, Federal Records signed her to sing with Millinder's orchestra. She scored other hits with Millinder such as I'll Never Be Free, Let It Roll, I'm Waiting Just for You. Allen's records are emblematic in many ways of both swing jazz's transition to R&B, and R&B's transition from rock & roll. Certainly the earliest sides are as much, or maybe even a bit more, swing than R&B - a logical connection, since Allen had been a singer with Lucky Millinder. She found a yet more impressive groove, however, with later sides with more of a funky backbeat, the best of which, the outlandish Fujiyama Mama, was famously covered yet more explosively for a rockabilly classic by Wanda Jackson.
