On this album Angel explores the heavier side of progressive rock, but still offers arguably one of their most progressive songs to date: The Fortune. The name Angel is used by, at least, 180 bands, according to Here are listed 18 of those bands. Angel were discovered by Kiss bassist Gene Simmons who secured them a deal with Casablanca Records in 1975. The original members of the band were Barry Brandt on drums, Punky Meadows on guitar, Frank DiMino on vocals, Greg Giuffria on keyboards and Mickey Jones on bass. Angel were going for gold here. It was the quintets second album for Casablanca home to Kiss, Cher, and Donna Summer, and they figured they shouldve been huge by now. So they donned angelic white suits of the spandex variety, doubled up on the 70s arena-rock mannerisms and androgyny, and penned heavy stabs for FM radio play, such as Anyway You Want It and Feelin Right. Their reach-for-the-sky prog-rock gestures indicated adoration for bands such as Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer its hard to escape the near-nine-minute epic The Fortune , and what comes across shows a young ban. Despite their dated white polyester clothes and androgynous makeup, Angel had surprising talent and range for a group whose initial purpose was to be some sort of divine answer to Kiss. That being said, their sound was far from original and was highly derivative of other top acts of the time, including Kiss themselves. So on Helluva Band you get the Queen-like Feelin' Right, the Emerson, Lake & Palmer-meets-acoustic-Yes of The Fortune, and the dreadful Boston boogie of Anyway You Want It. Helluva Band, 1994. After I had bought their DEBUT album, which I really loved, in June 1977, I then decided to give Helluva Band a chance, later that month, & am I ever glad that I did. I love the Helluva Band album just as equally as their debut album. I would like to offer my opinion & review of each song, as follows: 1. Feelin' Right. A definite feel good song & a great way to start this album. This Helluva Band album is a most definite recommendation for many others who think of ANGEL as a terrific band, just like I did & STILL do.
