Andy Palacio & The Garifuna Collectives 2007 album Wátina was widely praised as a masterpiece and introduced the world to the soulful melodies and powerful rhythms of the Garifuna people of Central America. Palacio passed away suddenly a year after the album was released, leaving his community wondering who would carry the torch of cultural revival and musical innovation. Andy Vivian Palacio 2 December 1960 19 January 2008 was a Belizean Punta musician and government official. He was also a leading activist for the Garifuna people and their culture. Palacio was born and raised in the coastal village of Barranco. He worked briefly as a high school social studies teacher before turning to music. Palacio received the award for Best New Artist at the Caribbean Music Awards in 1991, WOMEX Award in 2007 and was posthumously awarded the BBC3 Awards for World Music award. Album 2007 12 Songs. Andy Palacio & the Garifuna Collective had been gearing up for a great deal of touring in 2008, and Andy was looking forward to being accompanied by women from the Umalali project whose album will be released in March. After talking it over with the members of the Collective and Umalali, as well as with the venues that were planning to present the shows, all of us have agreed that the best tribute to Andys memory will be to continue with and even expand the touring plans for 2008. The native music of Belize is strangely hard to come by considering the proximity of the small Central American nation to the United States and the ready availability of music from other neighboring countries. Watina Cumbancha from Andy Palacio and the Garifuna Collective is an album that invites superlatives, distilling the essence of a little-known musical heritage and placing it in a modern context, making it accessible to a much-wider audience. The resulting album is a gorgeous reformulation of traditional music. Mostly acoustic, the group does make wonderful use of some understated but exquisite electric guitar. The album's autumnal colorings reflect the sad situation of the Garifuna people, but the gently insistent and ever-present undercurrent of percussion conveys a refusal to w. Andy Palacio is from Belize, the only country in Central America where the first language is English, rather than the Spanish spoken everywhere else. But although Andy speaks English well enough, he is, first of all, a Garifuna, a descendant of rebellious ex-slaves exiled in 1797 from the island of St Vincent by the British, who dumped them on an island just off the coast of Honduras. Having lived with the album for two months already, I can confirm that familiarity does not dim its allure. On the contrary, its insinuating, loping rhythms have become part of the soundtrack that defines 2007 so far, and my admiration for the ingenuity of the arrangements has increased with each play.
