Far from the Sun is the sixth studio album by Finnish heavy metal band Amorphis. It was the first album to feature drummer Jan Rechberger since 1994's Tales from the Thousand Lakes, replacing Pekka Kasari who had quit the band to spend more time with his family. Fueled with almost 100 percent clean vocals and heavy metal elements mixed with hard rock melodies, Far From the Sun is still a great album for any heavy metal user though may be somewhat of a disappointment to die hard old Amorphis fans. Amorphis is well known for their lyrics and musical style that both dwell in the concept of the popular Finnish national epic, the Kalevala like the way Nile dwells in the concept of Egyptian mythology. This album was recorded with Amorphis original singer Pasi. At their best, Amorphis have carved great, twisting metallic riffs from the building blocks of Finnish folk melodies, and that continues here with standouts like Planetary Misfortune, Far From the Sun, and Higher Ground. Yet as Amorphis drift further from their frenzied death metal roots and closer to mainstream hard rock, a trajectory they fully succeeded with on Elegy and less so on Tuonela and Am Universum, they lose the searching momentum that made their albums, if not always satisfying, at least intriguing.
