Monsters of Rock is a heavy metalhard rock compilation album released by Razor & Tie, which includes 16 hits of the 1980s hair metal scene except Special's 1981 hit Hold on Loosely, many of which charted in either the Top 10 or Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. A 2 disc version was also released, heavily promoted by TV commercials and containing 35 songs except for Cheap Trick's Surrender, which was released in 1978. Monsters of Rock was an annual hard rock and heavy metal music festival held in Castle Donington, England from 1980 to 1996, taking place every year except 1989 and 1993. It later branched into other locations such as the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the United States and the Soviet Union. In 1980, promoter Paul Loasby, along with Maurice Jones, planned a one-day festival dedicated specifically for bands within the hard rock and heavy metal genre.
