Al Haig Trio is a 1954 jazz album released by Al Haig on the Esoteric records label in later rereleases it is therefore often known as Esoteric or The Al Haig Trio Esoteric. The album is notable as being one of three that Haig released as leader in 1954, the final year of his first period of success. There followed some twenty years of obscurity, broken in the later 1970s, when he was finally recognised as an important pioneer of bebop, and began to be recorded again. One of three albums that pianist Al Haig led in 1954 before slipping away into obscurity for the next 20 years, this long out-of-print set was reissued on CD by the Spanish Fresh Sound label. The bop pioneer is heard swinging 13 jazz standards, accompanied by bassist Bill Crow and drummer Lee Abrams. Few surprises occur in this straightforward and concise set other than the inclusion of the Dixieland standard Royal Garden Blues, but it does give listeners a good example of Al Haig's abilities. Al Haig is a very melodic player who was always going to be a bit dissatisfied with bop, although he was considered good enough to back Charlie Parker, Fats Navarro & Stan Getz. This LP comes from a strange session which produced a 10 inch for French Vogue and a 12 inch for American Counterpoint CPT551. There is no overlap of tracks. If you want ballads go for the 12 inch, but the Vogue has the most rapturous version of Monk's Midnight. After the session, Al Haig packed in jazz for a regular gig with the USPS.
