The Divinity of Oceans is the second album by the German funeral doom metal band Ahab. This album was also released through Napalm Records, like their previous releases were. The album's cover was taken from the famous painting The Raft of the Medusa, by French Romantic painter Théodore Géricault. Daniel Droste vocals, guitar, synthesizers. Christian Hector guitar. The critical issue that arises with The Divinity of Oceans is the fact that in creating an accessible style of extreme doom by incorporating mellow passages and clean singing, the album loses much of its appeal and ends up somewhat lifeless in respect to its aims. What the aforementioned evolution of the bands sound essentially does is curtail their strongest point, and that is portraying the crushing might of their subject matter. Its not untrue that the abundance of softer sections fit in with. Album 2009 7 Songs. The Divinity of Oceans Ahab. The Divinity of Oceans is a concept album based on the true story of the Whale-Ship Essex which in November 1820 was sunk in an attack by a sperm whale before the men resorted to cannibalism in order to survive, as told by survivor Owen Chase in his 1821 book Narrative of the Most Extraordinary and Distressing Shipwreck of the Whale-Ship. This book formed the inspiration for Herman Meville's famous novel Moby Dick where the name Ahab is from. At the same time, the literary nature of Ahab's lyrics nudges them in the direction of prog rock, though fans of Yes, Rush, or even Opeth are unlikely to find anything here they like. Daniel Droste's slow motion howls, inspired on the band's last album by Moby Dick and on this one by Nathaniel Philbrick's In the Heart of the Sea and Owen Chase's The Wreck of the Whaleship Essex, are reminiscent of Michael Gira's, except when he falls back on doom metal's usual guttural growls, an increasingly bankrupt tactic.
