On the lighter side, What It Takes is a sequel to Angel from Permanent Vacation, and begins a tradition of sentimental power ballads that would carry the bands career well into the 90s. Aerosmith signed with Columbia in mid-1972 for a reported 125,000, and released this, their debut album. Released in January 1973, the album was straightforward rock and roll with well-defined blues influences, laying the groundwork for Aerosmiths signature blues rock sound.
