Adam Fredric Duritz born August 1, 1964 is an American musician, songwriter, record producer, and film producer. He is known as the frontman for the rock band Counting Crows, of which he is a founding member and principal composer. Since its founding in 1991, Counting Crows has sold over 20 million records, released four albums that have been certified gold or platinum, and been nominated for two Grammy Awards and an Academy Award. Two months ago, shortly after the conclusion of their European tour, Counting Crows entered Londons AIR studios and recorded August and Everything After with the London Studio Orchestra. That doesnt mean they played their 1993 debut LP of the same name, but rather an outtake from the sessions that gave the album its title. The missing title track has taken on near-mythic status amongst Counting Crows fans. A lot of Counting Crows fans might argue the group's best moment. Be it that four-minute stretch on disc two of their 1998 double album live set, Across a Wire: Live in New York City, when leader Adam Duritz extends Round Here to heights previously unexpected for the mid-'90s pop-rock band and riffs through Have You Seen Me Lately in a poignant, mysterious manner. Or, that quick instance on 2008's Cowboys, from the criminally overlooked Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings, when the band explodes into a fury of radio rock as the singer's. Of all of the acts to spill out of the 90s Bay Area rock scene, adult-alternative troubadours Counting Crows have been one of the most enduring. Their first album, August and Everything After, went seven-times-platinum, mostly on the strength of Mr. Jones, a top-five entry on the Billboard Hot 100 that remains their biggest hit. Lead singer Adam Duritz called to talk about the album and the tour. Question: I love Palisades Park as an opening track. Could you tell when you recorded that, that it would be the first song on the album. What brought you back around . Here he tells me how . Run-DMC, poetry and Japanese film helped build his writing and singing. Its been 25 years since Adam Duritz and his Counting Crows band mates released their brilliant debut album, August And Everything After. In the quarter century since then, the Bay Area band have sold over 20 million records and toured the world over probably hundreds of times. Before he formed Counting Crows, Adam Duritz was an English major at the University of California, Berkeley. Books were always his thing, and a big influence on his songwriting. Rain King was seeded in the 1959 Saul Bellow novel Henderson the Rain King, the tale of a seemingly successful man who is nonetheless unfulfilled. Their 2012 album Underwater Sunshine was a collection of covers, allowing Adam to detach a bit while continuing to perform. In 2013, the band released Echoes Of The Outlaw Roadshows, a live album compiled from their 2012 tour Mr. Jones didn't make the set list. The longtime Counting Crows singer suffers from Depersonalization Disorder, which makes the mind feel disengaged from the body and one's surroundings, for periods lasting from minutes to months. Duritz in 2008. He says it dooms all his relationships and has left him a lonely man in his 50th year. And not just the Thom Yorke kind. In my 20 years of interviewing celebrities, I don't think I've ever run across an interview subject who sounded more depressed, or was more willing to talk about his depression. I've gotten a lot of shit together in the last six or seven years, Duritz said. And there's a lot of areas of my life that are functioning very well.
