Gian Carlo Menotti July 7, 1911 February 1, 2007 was an Italian-American composer and librettist. Although he often referred to himself as an 1. Aaron Copland. Earl Wild. Part 2. Gian Carlo Menotti. The Concerto for Piano and Orchestra is a musical composition by the American composer Aaron Copland. The work was commissioned by the conductor Serge Koussevitzky who was then music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It was first performed on January 28, 1927, by the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Koussevitzky with the composer himself as the soloist. The piece is dedicated to Copland's patron Alma Morgenthau Wertheim. I was immediately struck by the jazz-infused elements which are similar in tone to much of Bernstein's own jazz-inspired works. The Menotti Piano Concerto was previously unknown to me, and over the years I've actually accumulated very little of Menotti's music. Indeed, I always thought of Menotti as second or third tier. Even so, while the Piano Concerto may not be a masterpiece, it can at least be referred to as entertaining and not without a certain charm.
