90 Day Men's first full-length record. Another that is sadly out of print. This came out through Southern in 2000. I notice Southern just repressed Karate' Day Men is an American progressive rock band formed in 1995 in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, and later based in Chicago, Illinois. Their name is a slang term used by police officers to refer to prison inmates who are due to undergo psychiatric examination. The group began as an early post-hardcore band, similar to Louisville, Kentucky, groups such as Slint and June of 44. Formed as a trio in 1995 by Brian Case, Cayce Key and Chandler McWilliams, it released its first 7 single in 1996. More to the point, in a strict sense, his voice is awful. But somehow over the chinking guitars and occasional backing screams he manages to sound fantastic, his voice the perfect fit, sliding in between the dueling guitar riffs with an effortless quality. Rather than the typical I will scream now to show you that I am more than a guitar god performance, Case sounds so effortless you assume there must be so much talent around him that he doesn't need to even try. It struck me, as it had before, that 90 Day Men are, overall, pretty fucking pretentious. And being a fan of progressive rock, I don't throw that term around lightly. It bothers me only inasmuch as the use of overtly self-important material is done in a ham-fisted manner, as in Exploration Vs. Solution, Baby and a few other spots on the record. Despite such diverse influences peppered throughout the album, the 90 Day Men come up with a feel that, despite its rich heritage, sounds quite unique. Joe and I agree: we're giving it to them.
